Sculpture

There have been three generations of professional Sculptors in my family and my early memories of visiting my Grandfather Philip’s studio left a strong impression on me. Yet, it was only a decade ago that I discovered my love of ‘ Drawing in clay’ as I call it. I began by making a portrait of Vic, my lifelong partner and fellow Artist. Knowing him so well, I could have almost sculpted his head by touch and it soon became clear to me that this was a medium in which I could develop my style. Working quickly, primarily with my hands and simple tools I completed several portraits, and then commissions followed. So as to avoid any formality or stiffness I particularly like to engage with my sitters whilst sculpting, encouraging them to talk, play music, read, or even watch their favourite programmes whilst posing for me.

More recently, during the isolation of Lockdown, I began to make small sculptures from memory and from my drawings. Using modelling wax, I made a series of figures, or 3D sketches, in the studio inspired by my favourite poses, models and even well-loved paintings and sculptures. I have now begun to cast a small number in bronze, and hope to present more soon.
